The Mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on a mission comprised of five basic tenets that have remained unchanged since the sorority’s inception more than a century ago. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind".

History of the Alpha Mu Chapter
In 1930, The Alpha Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered at Samuel Houston College in Austin, Texas. When Samuel Houston College merged with Tillotson College in 1951, the Alpha Mu chapter was dissolved and re-chartered as Beta Kappa chapter by1953, since both schools had active chapters. On March 13, 1955, Alpha Mu was re-chartered in the Notable North Atlantic Region as the undergraduate, Brooklyn City-Wide chapter, with the help of Dorothy Bostic, Former President of Delta Rho Omega.
The charter members of Alpha Mu are Grace A. Ball, Delores Boyd, Marcella Coulthurst, Barbara Franklin, Isobel Hoskins, Barbara Montgomery, Anita Pernell, Rhoda Scott, Lorraine Smith & Muriel Taylor.

The current colleges/universities on the Alpha Mu Charter are: Fordham University- Rosehill Campus, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Long Island University, Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn College, and New York University Tandon School of Engineering.
Programs
The program theme for 2018-2022 is Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service. The International Program includes five program targets that are designed to advance the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha with excellence and underscore our commitment to sustainable service.

The signature project is #CAPSM which is short for College Admissions Process. It is designed to assist students in their efforts to enter college by providing a hands-on approach that includes all the steps from researching various colleges to actually completing the application process.
